Robert Sturmhoevel (born 1983, Berlin) is a contemporary painter based in Kassel, Germany. After studying at the Kassel University of the Arts under Prof. Alf Schuler and Prof. Florian Slotawa, he became a master student of Prof. Johannes Spehr in 2013/14. Sturmhoevel is represented by Galerie Coucou in Kassel.
His work moves between realism and dreamlike abstraction, blending figurative and narrative elements with poetic tension. Children often appear in his paintings—not as portraits, but as symbols of memory, emotion, and transformation. Through subtle layering and a distinctive color palette ranging from muted tones to vibrant, almost candy-like hues, Sturmhoevel explores how perception and imagination intersect. Before approaching the canvas, he always creates countless drawings and studies, allowing him to fully immerse himself in the act of painting.
Recognized with several awards, including the Kassel Art Prize of the Dr. Wolfgang Zippel Foundation (2015) and fellowships from the Hessian Cultural Foundation, he has established himself as one of the notable voices in contemporary German painting. Sturmhoevel exhibits regularly in solo shows across Germany and abroad, and his works are featured in both private and institutional collections.
Sturmhoevel’s paintings never tell their stories outright — they open quiet spaces of ambiguity, inviting viewers to engage with their own interpretations.
